Biodiversity and the fight against poverty: Opportunities for Africa
12-17 September 2010
Libreville, Gabon
Libreville hosted an African Highâlevel Conference on Biodiversity which was attended by Environment Ministers from across Africa and other stakeholders. It focused on formulating a common African position ahead of the UN High-level Conference on Biodiversity in New York and the CBD COP10 in Nagoya, Japan.
The press release on the Libreville Declaration adopted at the Conference, highlights the following:
“In formulating their common positions, the African ministers call upon civil society, the private sector and community organisations to step up their efforts to work with governments to achieve the continent’s objectives. They also appeal to the international community to ensure adequate funding mechanisms and technology transfer to the African continent.”
In support of this conclusion, the Conference also served as an opportunity to consider the GDM in an African context and, notably, to support the need for further consultation with Africa following COP10.
