The current situation of consideration for a financial mechanism in biodiversity
21 June 2010
Japan Bank for International Cooperation
Tokyo, Japan
Following on fromĀ a seminar which took place in August 2009, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) hosted a second seminar on the GDM for about 150 participants. It was co-organised by the EcoTopia Science Institute (ESI) of Nagoya University and supported by the Nippon Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation, IGES and IUCN. On the following day, further meetings were also held with government officials, the private sector and NGOs.
The consultations in Tokyo demonstrated a clear and serious interest among Japanese stakeholders in the proposition of a green development mechanism. There was general consensus that such a voluntary, market-based approach to financing biodiversity could provide new and significant revenues to tangible biodiversity conservation commitments.
