International workshop on innovative financial mechanisms

27-29 Jan 2010
Bonn, Germany

This expert workshop explored opportunities for developing new financial mechanisms including a GDM in support of the CBD. Outcomes of the workshop will support deliberations at WGRI3 in May in Nairobi and COP10 in October in Nagoya.

Following this workshop there was also a one-day German NGO workshop on 30 Jan on ‘Chronically underfinanced – Mobilisation of Additional Resources for Biodiversity’ where the concept of a GDM was also discussed.

At both events there were presentations on a GDM and lively discussions about the case for a GDM and key elements of a GDM. There was consensus subject to further analytical work that some new international mechanism (a ‘green development’ mechanism) could serve both as a means of generating additional resources; and as a means of providing further coherence to ongoing efforts and new initiatives.

The CBD Secretariat’s note available below provides the basis for further discussion of a GDM by the Parties to the CBD at their WGRI-3 meeting.
