The Business of BioTrade: Conserving biodiversity through using biological resources sustainably and responsibly

24 Nov 2009
Geneva, Switzerland

The UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative organised a workshop at their headquarters in Geneva as a contribution to further the implementation of the CBD COP9 decisions on incentive measures and business engagement. The workshop provided a platform to share experiences, challenges and opportunities that promote private sector in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Importantly, the meeting focused on providing concrete inputs and recommendations to the CBD and other biodiversity-related MEAs, especially for the International Year of Biodiversity (2010) and COP10 of the CBD.

Francis Vorhies co-authored the background paper for the meeting which explored the market-based incentives generated within the activities of the BioTrade Initiative. He also facilitated the workshop and in this context explored the opportunities for linking BioTrade principles and programmes to a GDM. Clearly BioTrade activities are promoting green development, and, are providing a substantive opportunity for investing GDM resources in market-based initiatives which conserve biodiversity through economic development.
