SAI Platform Advisory Council Meeting

06 October 2009
Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform is an organisation created by the food industry to actively support the development of sustainable agriculture involving the different stakeholders of the food chain. It supports agricultural practices and agricultural production systems that preserve the future availability of current resources and enhance their efficiency.

Meeting this year at Unilever’s headquarters, the Advisory Council provided independent guidance to the SAI Platform on current and emerging issues regarding sustainability in the food sector. A key topic at this meeting was the issue of ‘land grabs’ in developing countries. Representing IUCN at the meeting, Francis Vorhies also briefed the Council on the GDM 2010 Initiative and its plans for building support for a GDM over the next year. A GDM could provide an opportunity for SAI Platform members to ensure a net positive biodiversity impact from their agricultural supplies.
