SBSTTA14, WGRI3 & the gdm 10-28 May 2010 Nairobi, Kenya At the end of May, two of the key meetings in the process leading up to COP10 in October took place in Nairobi.
At SBSTTA 14 (the 14th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice), we held a side event on Friday, 21 May on 'Post-2010 targets and a green development mechanism.' The event was attended by over 40 people who engaged in a lively discussion on the challenges and opportunities of setting up a gdm to meet CBD targets, including an increase in coverage of protected areas, support to local development and additional financial resources. On the previous day - Thursday, 20 May - the gdm was also introduced in a side event organised by IUCN on environmental economics.
At WGRI3 (the 3rd meeting of the Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention) we held a side event on Tuesday, 25 May, on 'A green development mechanism and international innovative financing.' With over 50 participants, this event also generated a very lively discussion on the gdm in light of the deliberations of the Parties on business engagement and innovative financial mechanisms.
The recommendations of WGRI3 to COP10 include:Next steps on the road to Nagoya include further consultations, particularly with the African group, and further articulation of the modalities and marketability of a gdm, possibly with initial pilot projects.
